Black Derby Homecoming is a daytime social and professional networking experience aimed at connecting and reconnecting Black visitors and locals with the city of Louisville, while highlighting Black-owned brands and local businesses. Our focus is on fostering long-term relationships and community engagement, specifically marketed to Black Patrons and those wanting an elevated, yet laid back Derby experience.


Our Impact

Black Derby Homecoming is building meaningful connections and economic opportunity in Louisville—on Derby weekend and beyond. Our inaugural year proved the demand for a community-centered Derby experience that celebrates culture, supports Black-owned businesses, and brings people together in lasting ways.

About the Founder

Cassia Herron is the Founder and Curator of Black Derby Homecoming. A Louisville resident since college and lifelong Kentuckian, Cassia has more than 25 years of experience in community development, food systems, and urban planning. She has championed initiatives that expand food access, support local farmers and entrepreneurs, diversifies the state’s energy economy and increases the quality of life of ordinary people. She is a Co-Founder of the Louisville Community Grocery; helped establish Louisville Metro Government’s Farm-to-Table initiative and has served as board chair for two state-wide organizations - Community Farm Alliance and Kentuckians For The Commonwealth.

Herron coaches nonprofit executives, small business owners and founders with a speciality in working with start-up grocery cooperatives. She recently launched Herron Inc to focus her coaching and fundraising services on supporting food and beverage entrepreneurs and explore other roles in the hospitality industry. She’s a graduate of the University of Louisville and holds a Master’s in Urban Planning from the University of Michigan. Cassia is a proud mother of two young adults.
